Today I want to share a bit more information about all the details that went into Kieran's birthday and party. We did a lot of handmade and homemade stuff, because as you know, I'm broke, therefore I craft!
On his actual birthday, I used this recipe for buttercream frosting for his cake, which was our approximation of this funfetti cake.
And the idea for the bunting came from here (although it's something I came across on various sites)
This is the cupcake recipe I use all the time, and for the party I tried this buttercream recipe.
The layered sandwiches are a throwback to my childhood. We always had these at birthday parties, and I think all my West Indian readers will recognise them! It's simply cheesepaste coloured with food colouring.
I used this sugar cookie recipe frosted with left over frosting from the first birthday cake. And the sprinkles on the cookies and cupcakes I made myself!
The balloon wreath tutorial came from here. It almost didn't get made, but I pulled it together the night before the party. Expect to see it show up at every party for the next few years!
When I saw this cardboard house and this photoshoot idea I knew that Lucas had to get busy. We definitely needed to have a house with balloons!
He got three large cardboard boxes and constructed it in less than an hour. It's held down with tent spikes. I wanted to test if it would fly, but waited too late in the day to make the suggestion.
This is the table with the gifts. I painted a little wooden shadow box house, and decorated it with the bunting from the first birthday cake. The party hats are made from patterned paper. And of course we needed Paradise Falls.
I used this idea for a ruffled wall using crepe paper, and made a long narrow strip which I then hung from the table to simulate the waterfall.
The balloon cart with the goodie bags is Kieran's walking wagon that I stuck the word Balloon (and Ballon) to using sticker paper.
My inspiration for the goodie bags came from this crayon monster tote.
I pieced the house with the balloon onto the front, and stuck a crayon and paint brush in the front door. Inside were an activity book, a canvas for the art activity,
and adventure book that I made using my scrapbooking supplies.
There was also playdough which they got to take home
The art activity idea came from this handprint canvas kit. If you've seen the movie you might remember when Carl and Ellie are painting their house they put their handprints on the mailbox? It couldn't have worked out better!
I made the art smocks right there on the spot using old t-shirts and this tutorial. It literally took 30 seconds for each one!
Phew! If you stuck it out, thanks for reading! I think I talked about everything we made. Let me know if you have any questions or need more details for anything.
